SanShou players SAN SHOU “TAIJI FOR TWO:”
with Kathleen Cusick and Dr. Jay Dunbar
March 12-13, 2011 (Two-day intensive: first half, moves 1-27)
May 12-15, 2011 (Four-day intensive: Thurs-Fri moves 1-27, Sat-Sun moves 28-44)

San Shou, the traditional taiji two-person set, is a sequence of 88 matched movements that reveal the martial applications of solo form postures and the subtle principles that make them effective. This is the form pictured in Chen Yenlin's famous two-volume book (1932). While it is of early Yang style origin, no similar form exists in any other style, so players of all styles must look to this set for practice and inspiration. (Pre-requisites: one year (minimum) of solo Taiji form study, or player is the fully-informed spouse of an experienced player.) Magic Tortoise Intensives are immersion experiences. Each participant learns one side of the set both as a solo routine and matched with the other side in a safe, “conversational” context. Individuals may register separately, as partners are rotated throughout. However, couples/training partners who wish to play taiji together will find San Shou especially rewarding. San shou, “taiji for two,” is fun: truly a circle of energy between two players. The March weekend or the first two days of the May intensive provide an excellent introduction to this wonderful interactive set, and may be taken separately.

March 12-13 (weekend) or May 12-13 (Thurs-Fri): $170.
May 12-15 (four days): $300.

Locations:
March 12-15: Integrative Health Center of Chapel Hill, 55 Vilcom Center, 2nd Floor Boyd Hall (Weaver Dairy Road opposite Timberlyne Shopping Center). See Google Map.

Pre-registration required: send full fee to “Magic Tortoise,” c/o Dr. Jay Dunbar, 15 Timberlyne Rd, Chapel Hill NC 27514. No refund if cancellation occurs within one week of the intensive.

Taiji players will be introduced to relationships between fundamentals, frame, form, function and fighting through the Combined Four Flowers exercise and various sets of “three-person push,” “two-person drills,” and “Da Lu” exercises.
